Using Baking Soda for a Colon Cleanse

The gastrointestinal tract of the body contains toxins. These toxins are said to be eliminated from the tract by the help of a method they call colon cleanse. The procedures’ proponents had introduced the beneficial effects of herbs and baking soda and others. These benefits include the immune system enhancement, constipation reliefs, energy boosts, and healthy bacteria promotion.Baking Soda for a Colon Cleanse

Colon Cleansing

Preparation prior to undergoing a medical procedure is the main point of doing colon cleansing. Before the procedure colonoscopy, doctors suggest the cleansing of the colon with the use of colonic irrigation. Dr. Michael Picco, a gastroenterologist of Mayo Clinic however, says that promoting the colonics procedure should not be done by doctors for the purpose of detoxifying the gastrointestinal region. The belief that the elimination of non-specific toxins inside the body is necessary has no scientific evidence to support it. Actually, the colon, together with the liver and the kidneys has its own natural way in cleansing itself or in removing bacteria, toxins and wastes from it.

About Baking Soda

Sodium bicarbonate commonly known as baking soda is of very much use in the aspects of medical purposes like giving of first aid and as antacids. Baking sodas are sort of salt that neutralize and break down protein. Baking soda is capable of absorbing and neutralizing stomach acids, and also in relieving indigestion and heartburn which are occasionally alternating. And due to its balancing acids ability, sodium bicarbonate has proven its effectiveness in reducing odors.

The Relationship between Baking Soda and Colon Cleanse

Since the baking soda is known to be capable in absorbing odors, probably inhibiting kidney disease progress and easing discomforts in the intestines, it has been thought that it can as well be as efficient in cleansing the colon. The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology published in 2009 a study which investigated a number of 134 patients having chronic diseases in the kidney. A group was treated with routine care and baking soda. Patients who were given baking soda in comparison to those who weren’t, has slower health decline of 65%, the same for the normal decline rate of aging people. Also, the patients prescribed with baking soda less likely needed end-stage dialysis.

Other Options

The insertion of baking soda into the rectum is seemingly unappealing to people if there are other easier options. And there are in fact other options in wastes elimination and easing constipation, exercise and dietary fiber. Exercise is capable in easing constipations. It accelerates breathing speed, increases heart rate, jump-starts systems f the body. Also, exercise or working out results in a stronger contraction of the bowel and additional enzymes in digestion, by colon wall strengthening and blood flow increase within the gastrointestinal tract. Dietary fiber can also help in the natural way of cleansing the colon. High-fiber foods include seeds, nuts, whole-wheat breads, lentils, broccoli and pears.

Baking soda may interact with various medications taken. These include the intake of Xanax or Valium which are known benzodiazepines; diabetes prescribed medications and the tetracycline, an antibiotic. Jackson Siegelbaum has suggested that people with edema, heart disease and high blood pressure should avoid baking soda or sodium bicarbonate. It is also important to remember that during colon cleansing, plenty of water is to be taken-in for prevention of dehydration.
